The Gambier Islands are an archipelago in French Polynesia south east of the Tuamotu archipelago. The archipelago includes: the Mangareva islands, as well as Akamaru, Angakauitai, Aukena, Kamaka, Kouaku, Makapu, Makaroa, Manui, Mekiro and Taravai.
The flag was adopted in 1837 when seaman Armand Mauruc, wanting to trade under the flag of the Gambier Islands, convinced King Maputeoa to adopt a flag.
